Tooting Community Garden, Sunday 9th June

This is a view of the grass meadow from the other way. It gives a better idea (and it has grown since Thursday - amazing what some sun can do!). Some of the grass comes up to my shoulders.

On our way to the Open Day at Tooting Community Garden on North Drive. The border of the road is pretty meadow-like too. Looking towards the Common, you can see buses and taxis, just so we know we are in London, but many of the cars are almost invisible

This is what Tooting Community Garden say about themselves:

We’re a surprising community vegetable garden within a hidden-away space that we share with exuberant native trees and plants, just off Tooting Common. We’re a volunteer group linked with Transition Town Tooting, and we’re having our second birthday this weekend.

The garden is open as part of two London-wide schemes, Open Garden Squares and the Chelsea Fringe.

It's a lovely large space, and they are doing good work. The garden is run by volunteers.  Some of the residents in the house (divided into flats, occupied by young people including mothers with babies) are also beginning to join in. The group were given access to restore the garden, which was totally shut off from the flats. Now it is open to them. And it is inspiring to see what they have achieved in a place that was apparently completely overgrown. I like the way it is not too 'tamed', though, and I hope they keep that sense of wildness and mystery.
Transition Town Tooting have a blog here.

And the recently created ornamental garden:

Meanwhile, back on the Common (taking the long route home)....  The fair is packing up
